Weekly Feature: Hi-Tec
Hi-Tec is one of the newest additions to our footwear collection here at Foot Foundation. The company, however, has been around since 1974.
Hi-Tec Sports was originally founded in the village of Shoeburyness, in Essex, England. The original breakthrough success came from the design and development of the Hi-Tec Squash, a shoe specifically designed for the fast-growing game of that time.
An industry benchmark then and now, few shoes in athletic footwear history have recorded unit sales of over 18 million pairs worldwide to date. (Hi-Tech Sports Ltd., 2014)
As popularity for Hi-Tec grew, the company chose to launch the logo and brand name globally in 1982. This came after a decision to expand Hi-Tec into a major worldwide sports brand. Today, over 500 styles are being commercialized throughout 80 different countries world-wide. These include: Hi-Tec Outdoor, Hi-Tec Court, Hi-Tec Golf, Hi-Tec Sport, the Urban collections and Magnum brands.
Due to such early successes throughout the ’70s and ’80s, Hi-Tec Sports was floated on the London Stock Exchange beginning in June of 1988. The intention was to acquire consistent funding to allow for expansion into international markets. By the end of the ’90s, Hi-Tec Sports was, indeed, a truly global and successful brand name and company. In 2000, Frank van Wezel, Chairman and Founder, bought the company back from the stock market. This move allowed Hi-Tec to, once again, be privately owned and managed. (Hi-Tech Sports Ltd., 2014)
